Membership is open to any interested person who is over the age of 14 to 18 years.
Volunteer - Train Operations
Train Driver
- As a Driver, you are responsible for the safety of around 20 people for 1.6 km around the scenic Bulla Hill Railway
- Driving a train is a responsible and fulfilling experience. All training is provided.
- Complete safety training included - 8 hour Practical & written assessment
- After a year of non-steam driving, there is also the ultimate and challenging opportunity to train to be a steam loco driver which requires a different set of skills. Talk to one of our steam engine drivers anytime you are at the Railway, they love the challenge!
Train Guard
- As a Guard, you are responsible for the safety of around 20 people whilst the train is travelling more than 1.6 km around the scenic Bulla Hill Railway
- Age requirement 15 years of age or over
- Complete safety training included 8 hour Practical & written assessment
Volunteer - Station Operations
Kiosk
- selling food, drink
- retail items to customers
- Food Handling
Station Operations
- Assisting the public to board and disembark the trains.
- This includes a variety of roles including ticket collection, train dispatching, and arrivals supervision
- (opening the gate to let the passengers off the station safely).
Volunteer - Behind The Scenes
Repair Workshop Engine & Rollingstock
- Engines & rollingstock maintenance, service & Inspection
- The Locomotive fleet consists of models of steam, diesel and electric outline locomotives owned by the Railway
- Assist in the workshop and learn how to keep our fleet of locomotives and rollingstock operating, with no previous experience required.
Track and Lineside Features
- Track repair & maintenance
- Building and maintaining the track and buildings helps the railway keep on working and operating.

General maintenance of grounds
- Gardening

- Weed spraying

Membership is open to anyone aged 15 years and over who shares an interest in preserving and operating our unique miniature railway.
As a member, you'll become part of a passionate team of volunteers who keep the railway running for future generations. There are plenty of ways to get involved—from train operations and track maintenance to administration, gardening, events, social media and much more.
Membership Options
Full Membership
- Attend and volunteer approximately 1 - 5 days a month
- Ideal for members wanting to be actively involved in railway operations and club activities
Associate Membership
- A more flexible option for those with limited time
- Stay connected and contribute when you can
Life at the Railway
Our members enjoy much more than volunteering—they become part of a welcoming community.
- First Saturday of each month – Members' Meeting followed by our popular Play Day, where members can drive club locomotives or their own engines and rolling stock.
- Third Sunday of each month – Public operating day, helping run trains and creating memorable experiences for visitors.
- Wednesdays – Maintenance Day. Members work together maintaining the railway, signals, buildings, gardens and equipment while enjoying great company and plenty of laughs.
Members also meet throughout the month for management meetings, working bees and to enjoy time working on their own locomotives and rolling stock.
