Tullamarine Live Steam Society

Tullamarine Live Steam Society (TLSS) is a group of like minded people interested in building and running miniature steam, electric and diesel locomotives.   Members are also interested in model engineering including stationary steam engines and traction engines.

TLSS is affiliated with the Australian Association of Live Steamers and as such is one of over 85 other clubs Australia wide.

TLSS members share their hobby with the public by operating the Bulla Hill Miniature Railway on the third Sunday of each month, between 12.00 noon and 4.00 pm.  We are a not for profit organisation and all funds raised are used to maintain and improve the facilities. Members come from all walks of life, with all sorts of skills, and are all volunteers.

New members are always welcome.

Track Information

Tullamarine Live Steam Society (TLSS) has two ground level tracks.  One is a dual gauge 7 1/4″ & 5″ track of 1.5km with a maximum grade of 1:80 on straights and 1:100 on curves.  The second is a dual gauge 5″ & 3 1/2″ track of 600m also with a maximum grade of 1:80 on straights and 1:100 on curves.

Each track is serviced by a separate unloader, steam-up bays and turntable.  All steam-up bays have compressed air, water and 12 volts supplied.  The 7 1/4″ & 5″ facility requires the vehicle that is unloading to reverse to the unloader and can service one vehicle at a time.  The 5″ & 3 1/2″ facility is drive through and has the capacity to service two vehicles at a time.

There is also a separate 7 1/4″ truck unloader that can unload high vehicles and heavy locomotives.

Due to the nature of the soil at Bulla Hill, which expands and contracts seasonally, the TLSS tracks are best suited to narrow gauge prototype locomotives.
